The Christian Life
Jesus summarised very simply the way we should live:
- Love the Lord your God with the very essence of your being, with all your thoughts, all your emotions and all your stength
- and love your neighbour as yourself.
LUKE 10:27, ROMANS 13:9
So, as Christians, our love of God should permeate everything we do. However, we can only learn to love someone by spending time with them, and that means more than just an hour on a Sunday morning.
Of course, the Sunday services do have a valuable role. They provide opportunities to join the Christian family in giving thanks and praise to Jesus our God, to learn from the preaching and pray together for concerns within the family and in the world outside our door. Services can be both uplifting and challenging. They can also be hectic or uninspiring. At these times, it is important to remember to fix on Jesus, not the church service, as the centre of our life.
After the service many people linger and talk, maybe with a cup of coffee. For some this is the best part of the morning - it provides fellowship, but how many of the conversations are more than superficial?
For this we need to spend longer together, which is the aim of the various fellowship groups connected with our church. Some meet regularly in people's homes to study the bible, to explore issues in our faith or just to talk.
On Wednesday mornings the church is open for anyone to drop in for a coffee.
Springboard is a monthly men's meeting with a wide variety of speakers and visits arranged. This is balanced by the Womens Fellowship meeting monthly on Wednesday afternoons.
For the early risers, there is an extended programme of Men in the Morning each Friday from 6:30 to 8:00am at The King's Table - a christian cafe in Warwick Road, Kenilworth.
More active fellowship is provided by the various badminton groups - mens sana in corpore sano, as they say in Rome.
There are coffee mornings once a month on a Saturday morning to raise money for a different charity each month. These give us an opportunity to express our love for our neighbours in the wider world as well as our brothers and sisters within the church family.
If this looks a bit adult centred, then check out the activities available to the younger members of the church!
